Wigan Athletic have sacked manager Leam Richardson.
Richardson’s side have failed to win in any of their last seven matches which has seen them fall to 23rd in the Championship table.
Towards the end of October, Wigan confirmed they had given Richardson a new three-year contract.
News of his sacking will therefore come as a surprise, but Wigan’s owners have now acted and the process in finding a new manager will begin to take place.
The 42-year-old had done an impressive job with the north west side, earning them promotion to the Championship and winning the League One title last season under new ownership at the club.
Wigan said in a statement: “Wigan Athletic can confirm that Leam Richardson has left his role as first team manager of the club.

“Last season, Richardson guided the club to the title on the final day of the season against Shrewsbury Town as Latics returned to the Championship in his first full season in charge.
“However, having looked at the recent run of form that is challenging the team’s status as a Championship club, the Board have made the decision to make a change.
“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Leam for his efforts and dedication throughout his time at the football club, none more so than during the period of administration and his instinctive reaction that helped save the life of Charlie Wyke.
“A much-loved individual and someone who Latics fans will always hold in very high regard, Leam will always be welcomed back at the DW.
“We would like to wish both Leam and his family the very best for the future.”
Richardson took over Wigan when the club was in administration in 2020.
Wigan currently remain two points from safety and 11 from the Championship play-off positions. They play Blackpool at home this Saturday.
